River canoeing and kayaking

Canoeing at LunksoosEnjoy traveling from Grand Lake Matagamon down the "EastBranch of the Penobscot" River; or try the Seboeis River and Wassataquoik Stream near Lunksoos, and Salmon Stream south of camp. Looking for gentle canoeing with kids? The Seboeis River is a great option, as is our immediate section of the EastBranch.

We provide transportation for you and your canoes to put-in or take-out, as needed.

We have a grassy tent camping area on the EastBranch, with hot showers and a riverside campfire included for weary canoeists.

The U.S. Geological Survey provides real-time flow rates and depth data for many Maine rivers. On their site, ignore the top of the page and scroll down to the Penobscot River Basin to see flow rates and depths for the EastBranch and the Seboeis.

Here's some fun: how to pronounce the Algonquian place names mentioned above:

  • Matagamon = Mat ah gam' un
  • Seboeis = Seb oyce' (rhymes with Joyce).
  • Wassataquoik = Wa sa' tuh cook'
  • Lunksoos = Lunk' suce (as in Dr. Seuss)

(Please note: this pronunciation guide does not translate well.)

Wildlife watching

moose watching

Moose, deer, foxes, weasels, pine martens, fishers, mink, groundhogs, and rabbits abound. We frequently see moose and deer as we drive in and out of camp, and there are many bears and coyotes in the immediate area. Bears and coyotes are very aware of people and stay hidden, so it is a rare treat to see one. Butterflies and beautiful wildflowers are also abundant.

Click the moose to enlarge the photo. The picture was taken on the road into camp.

Birding

Please click the link for lots of species and habitat information. Enjoy our interactive table of the birds that live and breed here.

Visit us for a wonderful birding vacation. The variety and abundance of birds here are real treats.

Hiking

Many of the roads originally used for logging are no longer in use and make delightful paths for not too difficult walks. The road along the river from Lunksoos to the old Hunt Farm is especially nice.

For those seeking more adventure, we recommend taking advantage of the many hiking trails in Baxter State Park; we are halfway between the north and south entrances to Baxter. Baxter State Park Trail map PDF.
